Video Storyboard & Design

The Idea Donkey provides full-service video production to our clients, beginning with the conceptualisation of the video. No matter what kind of video content you wish to create—whether that’s a-mini documentary or an advertising video—a video storyboard design is a necessary step in the pre-production process to create a cohesive and captivating final product.

What is a video storyboard?

A video storyboard is a physical representation of the video planned shot-by-shot. We create storyboards using analogue or digital methods, sketching out the timeline and noting down any important elements of the shot as we go. It’s a script for the person coordinating the shots, and is a scene-by-scene representation of what the video should look like once it’s completed.

Notes below shot representations in a video storyboard can include:

Lines from an established script.

The movement of the actors or camera.

Notes about the props being utilised in the shot.

Music or non-diegetic sound being used.

Why create a video storyboard?

Planning a video storyboard is a crucial step in the process of creating a video. It’s the roadmap that takes us to the ideal result, and it makes communication between our team of creatives and our clients easier. In fact, you can think of it like planning a journey.

Once you understand where you need to go, you can visualise the route on your journey map (storyboard) to give you an idea of the resources you will need and the time it will take to reach your destination. You can construct a shot list, forecast any necessary special effects, and evaluate where the concept needs improvement.

Most importantly, it prevents unhelpful detours and inefficiencies along the way. Ideally, this is the stage where we list down everything we need to create your production plan and prevent revisions late in the creation process.

Our video producers are more than happy to collaborate with our clients while conceptualising the piece to ensure that their vision is fulfilled (while still flexing our creative muscles).

How do you create a storyboard?

Anybody can storyboard their idea. You don’t have to have a storyboarding tool, and it doesn’t have to be a work of art. In fact, you can start with something as simple as a piece of paper with drawings of stick figures. Take a piece of paper in portrait and draw out six equally-sized squares, leaving room beneath them for your shot notes. Treat it like a comic book and sketch out what you want each shot to look like.

If you’re not sure where to start, or you find the process too daunting, good news! We can use our industry expertise to do it for you. At The Idea Donkey, we use storyboard software to render a clearer picture of the proposed video. We find that using a digital medium leaves little room for misinterpretation, and we can utilise storyboard templates to make the process faster and much more efficient.
